QUESTIONS FOR LEARNING

There is famous Chinese proverb, which says “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.  In short, the proverb means, don’t just provide someone a meal, teach them how to provide for themselves. This is the foundation of my teaching methodology.

I had the opportunity to demonstrate how this works in practice in a recent lesson which I opened up to other teachers and students who were interested in observing the method of teaching with questions.  Four English teachers were invited to role-play a panel of guests on a fictional talk-show called “Questions for Learning” and answer questions from my students on a number of general knowledge topics.  The main objective of this exercise was to teach the students how to conduct research through questioning other people as a way of gathering information to develop their ideas and opinions.

I asked my students what they gained from the exercise.  Their collective views were that listening to how the different panellists answered questions showed them not only how to answer questions but how to use information to express themselves creatively in different ways; that they were shown how to think more deeply about things which will help them develop and express their ideas and opinions more confidently. The students also told me that they were able to learn more about four different topics in 45 minutes than they may have learnt in four separate 45 minute lessons on each topic.
The lesson was about teaching my students how to “fish” and from their comments I am very confident that they are indeed learning to do so. I have discovered that teaching with questions is often more effective for developing students’ minds, especially students preparing for higher education in Western Universities abroad.  You can give them the answer and they will be satisfied until they have another question or you can teach them how to find the answer themselves and they will be self-sufficient or at least more equipped for the rigours of higher education.  Another very important point I try to help students understand is that there is not only one answer to questions just as there isn’t only one type of fish in the sea.

In summary, the Chinese proverb about teaching a person how to fish is very similar to what an English artist and explorer by the name of Thomas Curruthers once said about teaching:  “A teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary”, which to me means that the ultimate goal of a teacher is for the student to have no need for a teacher. Over time the teacher becomes less and less needed and one day, not needed at all. This is because a good teacher not only imparts information, but teaches how to learn and find information.
